What You Need to Know 关于 加州的 National Parks

The Golden State's celebrated national parks and federal lands are open,

加州的 国家公园和纪念碑 preserve some of the world's most spectacular scenery, so it's no surprise that people flocked to their wide-open spaces during the COVID-19 crisis. The parks' wildly beautiful landscapes and fresh air provided much-needed solace from the world's troubles.

今年夏天, the National Park Service expects even greater numbers of visitors to travel to national parks, so it's wise to do a little research before you head out.

克里斯汀·比克曼,翻译主管 雷斯岬, 加州唯一的国家海岸, says the best way to stay up-to-date on your favorite national park is to download the National Park Service's new app.

NPS应用 获取你的位置, so as you drive closer to 雷斯岬 or any other park, 你可以看到那个公园的实时信息,”她说.

NPS应用程序有热门景点的信息, 小径, 旅游, and interpretive programs as well as interactive maps and itineraries for 423 national parks across the country. Beekman notes that "many national park units have spotty connectivity, so we encourage folks to download information from the app before they enter the park."

Visitors can also refer to each park's social media accounts, 尤其是微博, for updates on road conditions and weather events that might affect their trip.

自从加州庆祝 全面经济重新开放 6月15日, visitors also need to remember that national parks are managed by the federal government, 不是国家. 即使国家公园的道路, 小径, 视野是开放的, some facilities and programs may still be under pandemic-related restrictions or closures.

“全国, 一些国家公园的游客中心, 班车, ranger-led活动, and partner businesses like restaurants have not yet reopened. That might be due to federal COVID guidelines or it might be a shortage of seasonal staff,”比克曼说.

在雷斯岬国家海滨,旗舰 熊谷游客中心 is open, but the much smaller visitor center at the 150-year-old 雷斯岬 Lighthouse is closed.

"We do not have adequate ventilation in that building and it's a very small space,”她说. “只要了。 疾病控制与预防中心的指导意见中 recommend adequate ventilation and physical distancing and we are not able to meet those guidelines, 那栋楼将继续关闭,”比克曼说.

Rangers hope to reopen the lighthouse, its stairway, and museum by mid-summer. “ best way to find out when the lighthouse will open is to check the app or the park website,”她说.

Most 雷斯岬 visitors have been good-natured about park closures or restrictions, Beekman says. "Everybody's out t在这里 enjoying these same beautiful places, 每个人都在学习灵活变通,”她说. "If plan A doesn't work out, t在这里 are so many other beautiful places to go just down the road."

丽贝卡·帕特森,公共事务专家 红杉资本 & 国王峡谷国家公园, says visitors should also expect COVID-related restrictions at the side-by-side parks known for their giant sequoia trees and towering granite peaks.

"Most indoor spaces will continue to operate at reduced capacity to allow for social distancing,”她说. Visitor centers are operating on "a hybrid approach, with interpretive rangers providing information outdoors. Indoor exhibits will undergo a phased reopening over the course of the summer." Many in-park restaurants are not offering indoor dining, but most are serving takeout food. (For a full list of open and closed hospitality services in 红杉资本 and Kings Canyon, click 在这里.)

免费穿梭巴士 are running in Giant Forest, home of the world's largest giant sequoia tree, the 谢尔曼将军. But shuttles are permitted to carry only a limited number of riders on a reduced number of routes,

"Visitors to the parks should bring their masks," Paterson says. “每个人都需要戴口罩, 无论接种情况如何, 在一些地方, 如上了班车和上了旅游的 水晶洞穴."

The marble cave has been one of 红杉资本 National Park's most popular attractions since it opened in 1940. Crystal Cove was closed in summer 2020, but this year, visitors can 提前订票 and take a guided cave tour—as long as they're masked.

One hundred miles north of 红杉资本 and Kings Canyon, 约塞米蒂国家公园 welcomes visitors to its granite cliffs and waterfalls this summer, but day-use reservations are required for all vehicles entering the park. 露营或 住宿预订 in Yosemite also serve as day-use reservations, but you'll need to book far in advance—露营地 酒店的运力也在下降.

To see the massive trees, you'll have to hike two miles each way. (For a full list of open and closed visitor services in Yosemite, click 在这里.)

Despite these disruptions or modifications in service, most national parks are expecting record numbers of visitors this summer. Paterson suggests people arrive early in the day to avoid long waits at entrance stations and plan on extra time to find parking at major sights and trailheads.

Beekman says 雷斯岬 may possibly set new records this summer. “如果说我们从去年中学到了什么的话, 而是在外面是安全的, 这是令人愉快的, 它在很多方面都很美妙,”她说.

随着越来越多的人参观国家公园, it's important that everyone read and understand the National Park Service's 重建负责任地 原则,她说. 他们详述了"10的必需品" that visitors should carry with them for their personal safety, and explain good-neighbor policies like "if you brought it, 随身携带它”,以帮助减少公园里的垃圾.

"As long as folks continue to have that joie de vivre of being outside and caretaking their awesome public lands,”她说, “这将是一个很棒的夏天.”
