THE DIMINISHING MILK ILLUSION

This is a very visual piece of magic and is an illusion in miniature. On the table are seen four clear transparent tumblers in four different sizes. Each tumbler is approximately twice as large the previous one. The smallest tumbler is full of milk. The performer pours the contents of this tiny tumbler into the next largest tumbler and magically the milk has doubled in quantity and fills the entire larger tumbler. This is repeated with the other two tumblers doubling the quantity of milk again and again. A miracle! ELECTRONIC RELEASE HANDCUFF

This is not actually an electronic trick but it certainly has an ELECTRIFYING effect on the audience. A metal shackle has two chains at each end. CUT AND RESTORED HANKY

Invented by Yan Tiong Phoa this incredible effect has become one of the classics of magic. A handkerchief is examined and then held in both hands as it is wound up rope fashion. Taking a pair of ordinary scissors the magician cuts right through the hanky and shows it is in two separate pieces. The Medium sits with her back to the audience. She asks you to deal ANY five cards, face down, from your own well shuffled pack. She asks you to give them to the assistant so that he may make a mental impression of them. She then asks the assistant to show a second pack to the audience. COLOUR CHANGING C.Ds.

Effect: Performer places a silver coloured disk in a frame with a cut-out which they can see right through. The disk is placed in the frame, and the silver colour of the disk can be seen both front and back. With a snap of his fingers the magician instantly and visibly causes the disk to change colour. The disk is removed from the frame, now in an entirely different colour. This is repeated with two other silver disks which are visibly changed to two other colours. SILK CHANGE TUBE

A tube is opened up and shown to contain green stripes. A green silk is placed inside to match up with the green stripes. The tube is folded flat and a magic pass is made over it. THE SILVER SCEPTRE

This is a really entertaining effect which can be used for adults or children with the audience close to you. A silver rod is shown and is rubbed with a silk (not supplied), the Sceptre is pushed right down into the silk within the closed fist and suddenly it begins to rise up out of the silk handkerchief. This is repeated and then the Sceptre is pushed inside and examined bag. Slowly and mysteriously, the rod rises until it is completely out of the bag. It is repeated but this time the bag is held sideways and still the rod slowly pushes its way out. Finally the rod is placed into the bag and turned upside down - the bag suddenly shoots right up into the air and the rod is shown to be free from any attachments and the bag can be examined. The performer displays a large box. The lid is opened to reveal a large clock dial and hand. A spectator is invited to hold the box and think of any hour which marks some memorable event in his life. He is to turn the hand to that hour, close the lid and padlock the box. The spectator now holds the box against his heart. The performer has had his back turned on the proceedings throughout and can even have left the room. Nevertheless when the spectator concentrates on the hour selected the performer can accurately reveal WITHOUT TOUCHING THE BOX IN ANY WAY, the hour chosen. Paper is folded at the centre and a piece CUT OFF at that point, with ordinary scissors, the cut-off piece FALLING TO THE FLOOR, satisfying all minds that the two pieces of paper remain in performer’s hand.
Performer places the two pieces into right hand, holding end of one between the first finger and thumb. Balance of paper is now allowed to drop. THE BLINDFOLD DRIVE

Through the years, magicians have performed many interesting mysteries with their eyes blindfolded. Their eyes have been covered with various articles including bread dough, coins, wads of cotton, powder puffs, folded paper, sheets of metal, adhesive tape and a variety of cloth blindfolds. But they have still been able to recognise writing, objects at a distance, and even navigate their way about.
The Blindfold Drive in which the magician is blindfolded by a committee and drives a bicycle, motorcycle, or automobile around town is an excellent publicity stunt. Properly presented it can make front page news with the picture of the magician.
The Blindfold Drive is not easy as it requires care and an accent on safety. You should obviously be a skilled driver, before attempting to drive blindfolded. The final impact of your feat will depend on your showmanship, and the trappings. Having the Mayor of the town,or the Chief of Police on the committee is always better for publicity than a couple of your friends!
Some magicians specialise in blindfold drives and have gone into a city or town and tied up with the news papers and commercial sponsors.
Where you are using the drive to build publicity for your magic show, get the news paper reporters to ride with you and a photographer to accompany them. STAND AND DELIVER (SHARPSHOOTER)

A baffling and entertaining effect for both close up and cabaret that’s easy to do.
The performer shows a deck of cards and one is selected. A small round sticker is initialled by the spectator and is stuck onto the face of the selected card. The card is then returned to the deck and the cards are replaced in the case and given to the spectator to hold.
The performer now brings out an invisible gun and, after plenty of comical bits of business, it is fired at the case.
The cards are now taken out of the case and spread face down. It is seen that one card has two bullet holes right through it. The card is turned over and it is the signed selected card.

DOUBLE LOAD GHOST TUBE

The Double Load Ghost Tube uses a combination of the Ghost Tube and Drum Head Tube for an extra large production from an apparently empty tube. The compressed load is almost as large as the inside of the tube, and apparently many times larger after production. Performer displays an empty tube. He makes some magic passes over it and produces silks, ribbons, paper money, etc. from the tube. After producing a few items, and showing the tube empty again, he caps the ends of the empty tube wit h two pieces of tissue paper, so that nothing can be introduced into the tube. The tube is placed facing the audience on a skeleton stand. A few more magic passes, and the paper is burst, and a much larger production follows. THE UNUSUAL SUSPECTS

In this puzzling magic trick, the audience is invited to participate in a police line-up and help solve the crime. A number of suspect cards are s hown, illustrating various criminal characters, and one is secretly chosen by a spectator to be the thief. The cards are mixed up and placed in the magic Profiler, which the magician explains is a space- age computer device used to catch criminals. The spectator enters some data about the criminal into the magic Profiler which amazingly identifies the correct suspect.

THE PRESIDENT'S LADY

A novel Turn It Round effect for your kids shows that has such a strong climax you will find yourself using it in your adult shows too! Magician tells how he won a silver cup - at this stage, you can personalise and topicalise the effect - it can be a cup for your prowess as a golfer, a swimmer, an athlete, a magician! - you were awarded the silver cup but wish it had been the gold one you had won. Unfortunately too, on the way home in the bus, you put the cup on the seat beside you and when a big, fat lady got on, she sat on it! - so it’s squashed and as flat as a pancake! The flat silver cup is shown; it is 9 inches high X 7 1/2 inches across. You say that the cup was presented to you by the President's lady or you can say you received it from the hands of the duchess ... again you can topicalise, The Duchess of Bideford, ‘The Duchess of Muddicombe Manor" or what-have-you. It’s very nice but not what you wanted and you were very disappointed. There is plenty of scope for patter here as you describe the lady, using any of the old wife, mother-in-law or landlady jokes. The cup is momentarily covered by a 24 inch silk or cloth - when uncovered, it has changed from a silver one to a bright yellow golden one. “Yah, you turned it round." The cup is covered and reverts back to the silver one once again. "You cheated.” “Oh no, I didn’t". “Oh yes, you did". etc.
The cup is gold again and the silk is removed. "Turn it around, turn it around, what’s on the other side?" Suddenly the cup is turned over and flipped around, when it changes - there is no Silver cup but now there stands a figure in flesh, black, white, yellow, green and red of the President’s lady (or the duchess), attired in her ball gown, just as she was when she presented the cup to you! A sure laugh finish, different to anything else you have and easy to perform.
This is one of those lovely tricks that takes up no room in the case, but which plays quite a little time in the show. A trick which you can perform in your hands and one which gets maximum audience reaction.

WONDERLOCK

A banknote or a large value check is securely locked into a clear plastic frame with the wonderlock. The lock will only open with ONE of the FIVE keys supplied. MIRACLE DIE PENETRATION

On Derek Lever’s recent Lecture Tour around the country he presented this effect to thousands of magicians. Not one was able to discover the method used until Derek revealed it. A wooden die hanging from a chain is displayed freely. A wooden tube with no front or back is also displayed along with a spike. The performer explains that the die represents Houdini with measles and the block is lowered into the tube where it can clearly be seen. The spike is now thrust right through the tube and die thus imprisoning it within the tube. The tube represents the famous Water Torture Cell and Houdini is now secured inside it. Explaining that Houdini could dematerialise himself, the performer pulls on the chain and the die is slowly seen to visibly penetrate the spike and appear hanging on the end of the chain. Houdini will now return to his former state and so saying the die is lowered back into the tube and is seen to penetrate the spike in reverse.

SILK ON SASH

Effect : Performer vanishes a silk, or transforms it into a ball. He now displays a “sash” or large ribbon freely on both sides. SIBERIAN CHAIN RELEASE

This is probably one of the most famous escapes of all time and yet it is one of the easiest to perform. A steel chain, padlock and key are passed for examination. A spectator now binds the magician wrists with the chain which is pulled very tight and then padlocked. In a split second the performer is able to free himself from the chain and everything can be examined. The escape can be performed visibly if desired or it can be used to demonstrate how Houdini used to ‘dematerialise’ himself. This must be the last word in floating ball effects. We have given you many effects over the past years, but never anything so startling and beautiful to behold ... a classic in itself. A 5 inch ball is seen resting on a stand, covered with a chiffon see-through type of foulard. Magician picks up cloth with one hand and the ball in the other. GIRL IN THE PLASTIC BAG

Magic? You bet it is! And it’s big enough to be called “illusion,” too. Everybody knows that plastic bags can be dangerous, and you explain, as you unfold this huge bag, that your assistant will escape from a sealed plastic bag. She makes her entrance, wearing a skimpy, prison-striped outfit, and with the aid of an audience volunteer, she steps into the bag. You and the volunteer then seal the top of the bag with ordinary paper masking tape. A large cloth is held in front of her, and you explain that she has only a limited time to get out, or she’ll expire. Suddenly, the cloth is dropped, and she stands on stage, free of the bag which is still sealed. Inside the bag is her costume, and she now wears a shorty bathrobe! The other day I went to a concert and saw a very clever magician do a card trick where he counted six cards separately from hand to hand, threw three cards away and STILL HAD SIX CARDS LEFT. DOLL TO DRESS SENSATION

The performer shows a mat on both sides and folds it in half. A pretty doll is shown and placed into the folded mat. Suddenly the mat is snapped open and the doll’s dress flies up into the air but the doll itself has vanished without trace. The doll appears to vanish in mid-air leaving just the dress behind. The Chrome-Plated Tube measures 12 inches in length and 4 inches in diameter and is hinged lengthwise on one side, permitting the tube to be opened.

SILK VANISHING WAND

Here’s a novel idea! A wand which will vanish a silk hanky in the blink of an eye. The wand is spring loaded with a small hook on the end. Simply touch the silk with the end of the wand and poof the silk is pulled faster than the speed of light inside the wand. Many variations are possible. For example hide a red silk under a blue silk. A DEVIL OF A NAPKIN

This is an indispensable piece of apparatus and is based on the old ‘Devil’s Handkerchief'. The problem with that was that it was usually made from a thin material and bulged badly when the article had been vanished.
This colourful napkin is made from thick material and has a secret pocket which will allow you to vanish coins, eggs, balls, cards etc. Simply take the napkin by the four corners so that it forms a little bag, drop the article to be vanished inside, give the napkin a quick shake and the article has GAWN! THE VANISHING BOWL OF FLAMING PETROL

This is an updated version of the classic ‘Vanishing Bowl of Water’. A metal bowl is displayed and placed onto a wooden tray. ‘Petrol’ is now poured into the bowl. The bowl is set on fire and allowed to burn for a few seconds before a fireproof cloth is thrown over it. The bowl under the cloth is now lifted off the tray and carried forward. Suddenly the performer throws the cloth into the air and amazingly the bowl has completely vanished in mid—air. The ‘Petrol’ poured into the bowl is in fact coloured water, only a small amount of Ronsonol Lighter Fluid is actually used to create the flame. The flame is automatically extinguished when the fireproof cloth is placed over the bowl.

The apparatus consists of a Wooden Box 7 1/2 inches long, 3 1/2 inches wide and 2 1/2 inches deep ... Two lengths of unprepared rope are passed for inspection. A block of wood, over five inches cubical with a hole running, through its centre, is also passed for examination. The two ropes are threaded through the block. The performer holds the ropes by their ends with the block suspended in the centre. It is turned around slowly, showing all to be fair. The block is set on the stand with the ends of the rope remaining in full view. The top of the stand is fastened down, forming a framework around the block. THE BOILING KETTLE

This is a very unusual effect, which we appreciate will not be everybody’s ‘cup of tea’, if you’ll forgive the pun! Nor will you use it in every show. But for that special performance where you want to get everyone talking this is sensational. You use an ordinary kettle (not supplied) and pour into it a small amount of ‘water’. The lid is placed onto the kettle and you place it onto the table. Striking a match you now command the heat from the match to pass over to the kettle. The kettle begins to ‘boil’ with ‘steam’ coming out of the spout and if anyone puts their hand against the kettle it will feel really hot. Thus you prove the power of the mind can achieve miracles. EFFECT: A lady and gentleman are invited to assist. The lady is given a small notice board to hold, and the gentleman is requested to think of any card in the pack. On the face of the card (the identity of which is known to everyone) the magician writes a message, as he “reads the gentleman’s mind”. This card is placed openly in an empty envelope, which is, in turn, pinned (by means of a drawing pin) to the “notice board” held by the lady. There it remains in full view ... and the “Message Card” is never again touched by the Magician. The gentleman now names his mentally selected card. It is removed from the pack and openly dropped into the pinned envelope, along with the message card ... spectator himself now removes the two cards from the envelope, remember, he does this himself, Magician touches nothing! The gentleman hands his card to the lady, who names it aloud and shows it to the audience. The gentleman then reads the message card which says ... “The selected card is - of -”. That turns out to be the card just named by the lady!
The above is a magnificent routine for platform, Stage or Cabaret ... A further routine is given which is especially suited for close-up, Private or Press performances. In this the “notice board’ is omitted ... the complete test appears impromptu.
Another great routine described in the instructions, and for which materials are provided, is called ... “Design Projection”. Several members of the audience draw designs on small cards, which are collected, dropped into an envelope and tacked on to the board. Any person removes one of the cards ... concentrates on it ... and believe it or not ... performer can draw the selected design on a board or slate or describe it in any way desired! VISIBLE COINS IN GLASS

This is another fabulous Jack Hughes origination which has been stolen and in many cases, very badly made. THE DIE BOX

THE EXCELSIOR ROPE TIE

To patter about a student's efforts to disprove a teacher’s theory about mathematic the performer shows three lengths of rope. One is short, one is medium in length, and one is long. Holding three ends in one hand and the other ends in the other hand, the performer visibly stretches the ropes until they are all the same length!
The ropes are counted singly to show that there are actually three pieces of the same length. Then you prove that maybe things are not quite what they seem. A six foot length of rope is tied into a series of loops, forming a series of links in a chain. The performer places an end loop over each hand explaining that this rope chain was a sort of handcuff to protect the wearer from evil spirits. The performer holds one end of the chain with his left hand whilst the right hand picks up the scissors and cuts each loop, leaving four knots in the rope. The knots are trimmed and the rope is wrapped around the left hand. Upon unwinding the rope it is found to be RESTORED IN ONE PIECE. The burning and restoring of a borrowed handkerchief has always been a classic of magic, but most methods involved the palming away of the “extra” piece of fabric. The performer shows a multi-coloured rope, woven in five bright colours. It is coloured yellow, red, white, green and pink. The performer picks up the rope and coils it round his empty hand. When the rope is uncoiled it is found to be knotted. The ‘Square Circle’ principle has been around for a very long time, but it is still one of the best principles for production effects ever devised. This one is rather different since the metal tube is made on ‘Ghost Tube’ or ‘Phantom Tube’ lines which enables the performer to produce items from the Square Circle load chamber itself and also from inside the tube.
At the commencement of the effect, the metal round tube stands within the cut out wooden tube. The metal round tube is lifted out and shown clearly empty. It is replaced and the wooden outer tube is lifted up and also shown clearly empty. Bear in mind that when the round tube is lifted out the wooden tube can be seen empty anyway due to the cut out front, enabling the audience to see right inside. The performer shows an envelope which he states contains the 4 Kings. He says that one of the Kings has been taken from another deck of jumbo cards and it has a different coloured back. MASTER CHALLENGE ESCAPE FROM 75 FEET OF ROPE

This is the master feat of the rope manipulator’s art and is presented as a sensational challenge feature or as a grand climax with which to close the entertainment. A committee of spectators is invited upon the stage and permitted to tie the performer in any way their imagination dictates with a piece of rope from 50 to 75 feet in length. LUCKY LOOPS

Here is a baffling rope routine, with an off-beat climax.
Effect: Performer shows a length of rope coiled in his hands. He ties the ends of the rope together. When he pulls the rope from his hand five more knots magically appeared along the rope.
For the climax performer unties the last knot and the piece of rope comes off as a separate loop. This is repeated with the other four knots and four more rope loops are magically formed. He finally unties the knot at the ends of the rope, and this length of rope also transforms into a loop.

Effect: Performer displays a dozen Jumbo Cards, six of which are red, and six black. The cards are shuffled and one red and one black card pulled out and placed face up on the table, (or resting faces to audience on a stand or against two glass tumblers, depending on your performing conditions.)
The other ten cards are shuffled. A spectator is now asked to guess whether a card is red or black as it is held back towards him. The card is placed face down (back facing spectators) on the appropriate red or black face out “leader” card. This is repeated with all the other cards, so that there are two heaps of six cards each. The cards are now turned to face the spectator, who has successfully separated the red and black cards without seeing their faces, by his “mental powers”.
With a little presentation effort and suitable patter relating to the powers of the mind, this is an incredible effect.

MULTIPLYING BOTTLES

A trick used by the ‘greats’ in magic. A favourite trick of the late Tommy Cooper and many others. Two tubes stand on the table. One tube is lifted to reveal a bottle. The other tube is lifted to reveal a glass. The performer now commences to cover the bottle and glass and commands them to change places. Which they do time after time. Suddenly the performer appears to be confused and discovers an extra bottle. He places it to one side and carries on with the routine. But once again he finds an extra bottle. This is placed to one side. The routine begins again and of course another extra bottle is found, then another and another until a total of EIGHT BOTTLES have appeared from nowhere. At this point the performer calls ‘TIME AND GOODNIGHT’ and makes his exit. The trick is quite easy to perform and has a tremendous effect on the audience. The bottles used are the popular Martini style bottles and the two metal tubes are nicely decorated with a dragon design.
The Multiplying Bottles has become one of the classics of magic and is a strong stage filling climax to any magic act.

GIANT DRAWER BOX

Here at last is a production prop which will take a very large load indeed including a large rabbit. A nicely decorated box is shown completely empty. Holes at the side of the box enable the audience to see into the outer cover when the drawer is the drawer is closed and a magic pass made over the box. When the drawer is opened it now contains a live rabbit or a load of silks, a cake or three doves or even a crocodile. The Drawer Box virtually works itself. The size of the box is 12 inches long x 7 inches high x 8 inches wide and the actual load chamber is almost the size of the box itself. An added feature of this box is that when the load has been produced the drawer can be completely removed from the box. This is very useful if you are producing a live rabbit as the rabbit can be carried into the audience in the actual drawer itself if required.
